How to use the overtime pay calculator

  1. Enter the total hours worked in the week, as hours and minutes or decimal hours.
  2. Choose your currency and enter your regular hourly rate in it.
  3. Set the weekly hours after which overtime starts and the overtime multiplier that applies to you.

How overtime pay is calculated

Regular hours = the smaller of total hours and the threshold Overtime hours = total hours − threshold (never below 0) Regular pay = regular hours × hourly rate Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier Gross pay = regular pay + overtime pay

45 hours at $25, overtime after 40 at 1.5×: $1,000.00 + 5 × $37.50 = $1,187.50.

Under the threshold

38 hours at $25 with a 40-hour threshold: no overtime, gross pay $950.00.

50 hours at $30, overtime after 44 at 2×: $1,320.00 + 6 × $60.00 = $1,680.00.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tell me whether I’m owed overtime?

No. It is an arithmetic tool. Whether overtime applies, and at what threshold and rate, depends on your job, employer policy, contract, and the laws where you work. Enter the settings that apply to you.

Why are 40 hours and 1.5× filled in?

They are common example values and a starting point. You can change both. Some arrangements use a different weekly threshold, daily overtime, or a 2× multiplier.

Does choosing a currency apply that country’s overtime rules?

No. The currency (USD, INR, GBP, EUR, CAD, or AUD) only sets the unit and number formatting for your rate and results. The threshold and multiplier are always the values you enter, and no exchange rate or local law is applied.

Can it calculate daily overtime?

Not directly. This calculator applies one weekly threshold. If your overtime is based on daily hours, work out the overtime hours for each day, then use the totals.

How do I handle a biweekly pay period?

Weekly thresholds apply to each week separately, so calculate each week on its own. The Time Card Calculator can do this for a biweekly timesheet with custom overtime turned on.

Can I enter hours with minutes?
